BOE Could Reverse Decision on Crockett Hearing Monday

Less than a month after unanimously voting to convey a hearing into alleged racially insensitive and inappropriate comments made by one school board member against another, the Board of Education appears posed to reverse that decision at its next regularly scheduled meeting.

The school board's agenda includes the final item as part of Monday's meeting Monday, June 24, 2013:

"Discussion and Possible Action Regarding a Motion to Rescind the Action Taken by the Board On May 28, 2013 convening a Hearing under Article II, Section 19 of the Board’s Bylaws Regarding the Conduct of Board Member Michael Crockett."

The school board unanimously voted May 28, 2013, to hold the hearing as part of a special meeting to discuss a series of racially inappropriate and insensitive remarks Crockett is alleged to have made against another school board member, Ron Atwater, and a potential candidate for the vacant superintendent position; Atwater is the only black member of the Board of Education.

Under the school board's current bylaws, after holding a hearing into the alleged offense, and giving the accused an opportunity to respond, the Board of Education could then vote to censure the member for the alleged offense, but could take no further disciplinary action.

Crockett publicly apologized for the remarks at the June 10, 2013, meeting of the Board of Education.

Board of Education Chairman Chris Pattacini sent a letter to the school board the following day postponing the meeting that included the following language:

"The postponement would afford the board an opportunity, if it so chooses, to rescind the motion made on May 28th at our next regularly scheduled meeting, to be held on June 24."
