CHAPLIN, CT — A man is facing several charges after a break-in at a home in Eastern Connecticut, state police said.

At 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, state police went to a residence on Willimantic Road in Chaplin for a reported disturbance involving a break-in.

The resident called 911 and reported that Travis Stimson 50, of Canterbury, had forced his way through her back door and started an argument with a friend who was staying with her, according to an incident report.

The resident said Stimson had left the home once she began calling state police, according to an incident report.

The witness said Stimson was known to her and he had stayed at the residence in the past, and had also broken the back door in the past, according to an incident report. It was held in place only with screws, according an incident report.

After Stimson forced his way through the already damaged door, he went upstairs, argued with a friend and was told he was no longer welcome at the home, according to an incident report.

He was seen leaving on foot, and, after obtaining a description, multiple canine teams were deployed to track him, according to an incident report.

At about 9:36 am, a witness reported seeing an individual matching Stimson's description on North Windham Road in Windham. About 10 minutes later, troopers located Stimson in the backyard of a residence on North Windham Road, and he was arrested without incident, state police said.

Stimson also had an active arrest warrant in connection with a June 16 incident at a Chaplin business, state police said. On that day, state police received a call about a man unconscious inside a vehicle in the parking lot, with his foot on the brake and the vehicle in drive, authorities said. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned, and it was determined to have been uninsured with drug paraphernalia in plain view. Stimson was identified as the vehicle operator from this incident, and it was also determined that his license was suspended. An arrest warrant was approved by Danielson Superior Court.

He was charged for the break-in with:

  • Third-degree burglary
  • Third-degree criminal mischief
  • Interfering with police
  • Disorderly conduct

Stimson was also processed on the following charges pursuant to the active arrest warrant:

  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Interfering
