Coventry Marine Officer Rescues Non-Swimmers After Canoe Mishap

COVENTRY, CT — A Coventry Police Department Marine officer came to the rescue after people who could not swim had mishaps with their canoes on Coventry Lake, authorities said.

Police released details of the July 6 incident Monday afternoon.

That day, while on patrol, Officer Patrick Kilby heard people shouting for help, police said. He then discovered two capsized canoes about 200 yards from shore.

Two adults and two children were in the water and two of them were unable to swim, police said.

They were wearing personal flotation devices and managed to stay afloat until Kilby could get to them, police said. Kilby was able to pull the children into the patrol boat first, followed by the adults, police said.

They were transported to shore, where they received medical attention, police said.
