Briefly, what business are you in?
For 26 years, PrisCo Consulting has provided public and community relations, integrated marketing services, and special events to businesses from start-up to mega-corporations.
What’s the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?
Certainly the greatest challenge was in September 1995, when Hurricane Marilyn struck and decimated the island where I was based – St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. It took a year of working at alternative jobs (think: boat hostess, maid, messenger, babysitter) - before I could re-launch my consulting business.
What’s been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?
My all-time favorite moment was meeting Walter Cronkite in the British Virgin Islands upon the landing of the maiden flight of a seaplane service (my client at the time). Upon his request, I convinced the pilot to take Mr. Cronkite and his family on a quick spin in the seaplane. I still have the signed/autographed Polaroid photo of us together.
What’s the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?
I once had a client (an upscale resort in St. Croix, USVI) request that I invite dignitaries from across the world to the opening of their new Casino – the first casino to launch in the U.S. Virgin Islands. To my surprise, the turnout was excellent. This same client wanted wedding services to be performed on their resort beachfront, so asked my company to provide that service – proof, ‘Weddings by PrisCo’ was born.
How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
I have heard it said that ‘Volunteerism is the backbone of America.’ I believe it is extremely important to volunteer and give back to the community that supports my business endeavors. I therefore have served as a volunteer and/or in a leadership role on several Milford Chamber Committees for years, was founder and am current Chair of the Chamber’s Health & Wellness Council, and have served on the Board of the Network of Executive Women. I also volunteered and worked on the City of Milford’s 375th Anniversary Celebration Committee last year. I currently serve as Chair of the Milford Youth Services Network, and am the Program Chair for the Devon Rotary. I also volunteer once a month to serve lunch at the Beth-El Shelter with my fellow Devon Rotarians. One of my favorite volunteer roles is serving as a Judge for the Literacy Center of Milford’s Annual Leprechaun Leap and Neon Night Run events – and being a judge keeps me from having to jump into the freezing cold ocean, and from running through the streets of Milford dressed in neon.
