Masuk senior Marta Silva, 18, built and painted three picnic tables for camp sites at Webb Mountain Park for her Capstone project.
She planned everything out in June and July and worked on the tables over a four-day period in April.
Palmira "Rosa" Silva, Marta's mother, said, "Ranger Dave wanted to make sure the tables were strong and people could sit on them."
Marta said safety was taken into consideration and showed how plastic caps were placed over screws so people won't scratch their legs.
Park Ranger David Solek said he gave Marta direction by asking questions to consider during the project.
On Friday morning Marta showed Solek and First Selectman Steve Vavrek her work.
"I admire all the projects and for a Capstone student to choose this ... Capstone is just a phenomenal program," Vavrek said. "And this is another example."
Bill Rudolph, whose son Nick built tables on the other side of the park for his Eagle Project as part of St. Jude School's Boy Scout Troop, accompanied the Silva's to Campsite One.
Unfortunately, vandals covered the table Marta showed to officials with graffiti.
Marta said she and her mother had spent six hours working on two tables one day and three hours on the other.
"It was so beautiful, this table," Silva said.
Marta was also disappointed. But she looked over the tabletop and said, "Though I have to say, some of the designs are very nice."
Solek said kids often don't think of how vandalism affects other people. He recalled a time when a Boy Scout built two picnic tables for his Eagle project and just before he was going to get it, vandals burned one of the tables down.
