Monroe Teen Continues to Defy Odds: Report

He wasn't expected to survive infancy but is still here 16 years later.

MONROE, CT — For most, a teenager celebrating his 16th birthday is a common occurrence. However, one local family was told by doctors that their son wouldn't live beyond his first birthday, let alone until his 16th.

WTNH reports that Anthony Katz celebrated his 16th birthday on May 10, defying a diagnosis of a terminal illness. When he was a newborn, Anthony was diagnosed with x-linked myotubular myopothy, the most severe form of muscular distrophy.

Tina Katz says her son still requires around-the-clock care, but is doing well. He also has been named an honorary firefighter by the Monroe Fire Department.
