A nine-year-old boy blew by other runners, leaving most of the older kids and adults in the dust in Sunday's Sprint for Monroe road race at Wolfe Park.
Azaan Dawson of New Haven finished ninth overall with an unofficial time of 19:17:19.
"It felt good," Azaan said of running the race. "The last mile was tough."
Azaan and his sister, Assata, 7, both ran the 5K race. Assata had an unofficial time of around 26 minutes.
Both siblings run competitively. Their father, Che, found out about the Sprint for Monroe online at High Tech Racing's webpage.
"I was six when I ran my first 5K," Assata said.
"I was five," Azaan said.
Che said he has run 5k races before, including his kids' first ones, but he wouldn't say they get their outstanding running ability from him.
"I can't take credit," Che said with a smile. "They have good coaches."
