Families from Newtown walked among the crowds gathered on Route 111 for Monroe's Memorial Day Parade Sunday. They carried signs saying "Thank You Monroe" greeted townspeople and gave candy to the children.
After the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook School, Monroe offered use of the Chalk Hill School building on Fan Hill Road and town police officers have been providing security to make the families feel safe.
"We love it there and the police are great in Monroe," said Lou Ruggiero, whose daughter Grace, 8, now goes to school in Monroe. "It's just been welcoming. We want to thank the town. It's just been great for us."
Ruggerio said the Sandy Hook families planned to walk the entire parade route, giving out candy until they ran out, and then to thank the police officers and veterans.
