Sightings of Baby Skunks and Fawns

Monroe residents continue to encounter the babies of wild animals this summer. Animal control has responded to reports involving skunks and fawns.

A small, immature skunk walking around the Rite Aid Pharmacy parking lot, 508 Monroe Turnpike, at 7:13 p.m. June 24, appeared healthy and returned to the tree line without assistance, according to Animal Control Officer Ed Risko.

Danger On the Roads

A 10-pound fawn was struck by a vehicle and killed on Stanley Road. Police said it was found at 10:39 a.m. on June 22, adding no driver reported the collision nor any damages.

An 8-pound fawn was also killed when it was hit by a vehicle in the 200-block of Cross Hill Road June 19. The driver told police at 2:07 p.m. that he was heading west when the fawn ran out of the woods and in front of his car from the left side.

Police said there was minor damage to the front bumper.

Skunk Protects Its Babies

A skunk was acting aggressively toward people and cars on Sentry Hill Road, while protecting several of its babies at around 7:58 a.m., according to a report on June 19. An officer searched the area, but could not find the animals.

Risko said it was a routine sighting report for this time of year.

A Doe Comes Back

A fawn was seen in a yard on Huntingtown Road on June 13, but police said the doe returned and the fawn followed its mother back to the woods.

Risko said people should leave fawns alone when they see one in their yard, because the mothers routinely leave their young alone for much of the day while foraging for food.
