Take Monroe Out to the Ball Game!

It's Monroe Community Night at Bluefish Stadium on June 8.

Bridgeport Bluefish fans may think their professional baseball team was acquired by the town of Monroe when it faces the Lancaster Barnstormers on June 8. Town groups will be featured on the video board and over the P.A. system and Monroe First Selectman Steve Vavrek will throw out the first pitch.

Daniel Gregory of the Street Team says June 8 will be Monroe Community Night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Monroe residents will enjoy discounted ticket prices when the turnstiles open at 6:05 p.m.

"This is the first time the Bluefish are hosting Community Nights and it's the first time for Monroe," said Gregory. "We will try to do it every year and keep it community based."

Discounted ticket rates for Monroe residents will be $11 for box seats and $9 for reserved seats.

The Bluefish flier says: "It is our pleasure to highlight the town of Monroe while enjoying a great night at the park!"

On Tuesday morning, First Selectman Steve Vavrek said, "We just had Monroe Day at Beardsley Zoo, which was very well attended. Anytime anything in the region is for a specific town, it's a good thing."

Vavrek said, though all cities have their share of problems, Bridgeport is up and coming.

"My wife and I have been there for various events, whether it's the Bluefish, the Sound Tigers or concerts at Webster Bank Arena — and there's a lot of great restaurants and a great zoo," he said. "Bridgeport has done a good thing with nightlife and entertainment. The downtown is the place to be."

Vavrek played baseball in high school and college as an outfielder and a pitcher, but it's been a long time since he's taken the mound.

"I just hope I can get the ball over the plate," Vavrek said with a laugh.
