Vishay Buildings Are Smashed

Those of you driving along Main Street lately may have noticed that Vitramon Inc./Vishay's buildings are being demolished.

Town Building Official James Sandor says the property owner took out a demolition permit on March 15 to demo three structures on the 10 Main Street property.

The name on the application is Waterbury Wrecking and R.D./Scinto Inc.

The structures include a 34,000-square-foot building built in 1960, a 5,500-square-foot building built in 1970 and a 6,000-square-foot building constructed in 1987.

As of Monday, the Planning & Zoning Department had not yet received an application with future plans for the property.

Sandor said the buildings were tailored for the specialized use of Vishay and would likely not be suitable for a new tenant.

Interesting side note, Sandor said Vishay's business of precisely calibrating tools prevented a diner from being built across the street in the mid-2000's.

Louis Berkowitz, who owns a chain of Duchess restaurants, including a location at the corner of Main Street and Purdy Hill Road in Monroe, could not find a company to insure him for the blasting, according to Sandor.
