NAUGATUCK, CT — Students officially returned to schools in Naugatuck for the first day of classes Wednesday morning, which overall ran very smoothly, according to the Naugatuck School District.

Interim Superintendent Melissa Cooney said the district was thrilled to welcome students and families in Naugatuck back to school this week.

"Our staff worked hard to ensure a positive start," Cooney said to Patch, "and it was wonderful to see students already beginning to settle into routines that allow them to learn, thrive and belong in our schools."

"Across all of our schools, there was a strong sense of community and optimism, with everyone committed to creating classrooms where every student can truly learn at high levels, thrive in their personal growth and feel a deep sense of belonging."

Cooney also noted some schools experienced traffic delays during arrival and dismissal times, which caused a few buses to run late, however she also noted small traffic issues were typical for most first days of school.

"This is not uncommon as families and staff adjust to new routines," Cooney said. "We are grateful for our strong partnership with [Student Transportation of America] and the borough of Naugatuck as we work together to support safe and efficient transportation for all students."

Classes will be in session for the remainder of the week at Naugatuck schools before students are off for Labor Day on Monday, according to the district's 2025-2026 calendar.

"Just as in past years, we will continue to monitor and adjust as needed," Cooney said, "so that every child arrives ready to learn, thrive and belong each day."
