New Superintendent Appointed In Naugatuck: District

NAUGATUCK, CT — Naugatuck Public Schools announced Thursday night Interim Superintendent Melissa Cooney has been named the district's new superintendent of schools.

In an announcement posted to Facebook, district officials said the Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint Cooney to the position.

District officials noted Cooney showed "incredible leadership" during her time as interim superintendent and led Naugatuck Public Schools through significant change, staff turnover and the beginning of the school year with grace and professionalism.

These strengths, along with her previous experience, "proved to the board that she is the perfect choice for the next leader of our district."

Cooney previously served as assistant superintendent, as well as principal of both Western Elementary School and Cross Street Intermediate School.

"We look forward to seeing the positive direction Mrs. Cooney will continue to take our Naugatuck Public Schools as we live out our mission of being a district that strives to Learn. Thrive. Belong," the announcement reads. "Please join us in enthusiastically congratulating Mrs. Cooney on this new role!"
