William Edwards Sr Obituary

In Loving Memory of William L. Edwards Sr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, William L. Edwards Sr., of Bethany, CT, who left us on February 24, 2025 at the age of 85. Bill was a man of few words—a person whose quiet, thoughtful demeanor touched the lives of all who knew him.

An outdoorsman at heart, Bill spent much of his time in nature, fishing for stripers on the Sound, hunting, and tending to his family farm. He was also a talented craftsman, building everything from barns and cabinetry to beautiful rocking horses and furniture. He had a deep appreciation for the land and cherished his time on his tractor, a simple pleasure that brought him peace and joy.
Bill led by example, instilling in his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, education and responsibility. He grew up in Bethany, graduated from Amity Regional High School, and studied engineering at the former Waterbury State Technical College. He retired from Consolidated Industries in Cheshire CT, where he was the Plant Manager for almost 30 years. He raised his family in Prospect with his late wife of 63 years, Ruth, before returning in 1992 to live on his family’s farm in Bethany until his passing.

Bill was a consummate problem solver who had an innate ability to build or repair anything. His motto, “Measure twice, cut once,” reflected his meticulous nature and his belief in doing things the right and precise way. He lived by a straightforward philosophy, “If it’s worth doing, do it right”.

One of Bill’s most cherished traditions was the Sunday Morning Meeting with his dear friends, family and anyone lucky enough to be invited. Here, the group would discuss world problems, politics, where the fish were biting, and the UConn Women Huskies. If you were a regular, you had to submit a written note from your wife explaining why you were unable to attend.

He is survived by his sons William L. Jr. (Angela) and Eric M. (Kristen), his daughter Debra J Colaci (Joseph), his grandchildren, Ashley (Chris), William L III (Allie), Zachary, Bethany (Brandon), Eric, Joseph, Elena (Ryan), Lucas and Katie, his great-grandchildren, Avery and William IV, his surviving sisters Louise Ford and Sandra Barnes (Merritt), his Sunday Morning Meeting friends, Dave and Jim, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife Ruth J (Smith) Edwards. We will forever hold dear the lessons he taught, the laughs we shared, and the quiet strength he provided. His legacy as a father and a role model will continue to inspire generations to come.

A private memorial service will be held at the family’s convenience. Donations may be made to Bethany Historical Society in his memory. Prospect Memorial/The Palmerie Family Funeral Home is honored to care for and assist the Edwards family and invites you to share your words of comfort for them at prospectmemorial.com.
