City Peace Commission Member, 70, Struck, Killed By Hit & Run Driver

Police are investigating the fatal hit & run of pedestrian Yusuf Suat Gursey of New Haven, on Whalley Ave. & Brownell St. at 9:30 p.m.: PD.

When cops got to the scene, Yusuf Suat Gursey was laying in the road, "suffering from apparent injuries," police said. Taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be life-threatening, he was later pronounced dead, police ​said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — It was just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when officers were called to the area of Whalley Avenue and Brownell Street for a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian, police said.

The vehicle took off after striking Yusuf Suat Gursey, a 70-year-old New Haven man, police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart said.

Gursey was a member of the New Haven Peace Commission.

When cops got there, Gursey was laying in the road, "suffering from apparent injuries," police said. Taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be life-threatening, he was later pronounced dead, Bruckhart said.

The Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene. The vehicle was later located and is being processed for evidence.
