Obituary: Frank L. Cathey, 83, Ret. NHPD, of New Haven

A gentle giant, he was an Army MP, New Haven police officer for 3 decades, and after retiring, spent a decade with Yale University Security.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Frank L. Cathey on April 1st, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 83 years old. Frank was deeply loved by his wife, Joanne Cathey. He was especially cherished and adored by his granddaughter, Ali Garmizo, whose presence brought immeasurable joy and warmth into his life. He was a loving father to Vanessa Cathey, Anthony (Dawn) Cathey, Regina (Mike) Parillo, and a devoted grandfather to Kacia Leary, Tiffany, Logan, Erica, Kevin, and Trevor Cathey, Michael (Ashley) Parillo, Christina (Jordan) Zwickler, Alexander and Ariella Garmizo, Zachary Zukowski and Tammy Beirne. He was blessed with three Great grandchildren, Nathan and Benjamin Leary, and JJ Zwickler, who were lucky to experience his unwavering love and support. Frank was preceded in death by his siblings Carl Cathey, Ruthy Beal, and Thelma Lindsey; and stepchildren Mia Zukowski and Thomas Beirne.

Born September 14th, 1940, in Tulia, Texas, Frank served in the US Army as a Military Police officer. He dedicated over three decades of his life to serving and protecting the City of New Haven as a member of the New Haven Police Department. Upon retiring from the NHPD he joined Yale University Security, where he spent another decade. He was well liked and respected by his fellow officers, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Upon retiring from the force, Frank found joy in his family, particularly his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He devoted his golden years to creating lasting memories with them, imparting wisdom, and a sense of humor. His legacy of unconditional love and jokes will forever live on in their hearts.

Frank was a gentle giant, known for his warm smile, comforting presence, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones. He found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for camping, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and taking leisurely rides by the East Haven beach with his wife, often accompanied by their cherished fur great-grandchild, Blaze. Frank was happiest spending quality time with both his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frank will be deeply missed by his loving family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer walk among us, his gentle spirit will continue to shine brightly through the memories he created and the lives he touched. In honoring Frank's memory, tell a joke, hug your kids, and tell them that you love them. Time doesn’t wait for anyone. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that he was loved.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday April 6th at 11:00 am at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven, CT.
