'Iconic' New Milford Store Closes After Over 100 Years In Business

A New Milford hardware store that opened in 1901 closed permanently earlier this month.

NEW MILFORD, CT — A hardware store that had been serving customers for 122 years closed its doors earlier this month. H.H. Taylor & Son True Value went out of business Aug. 12.

The store posted on Facebook: "On behalf of the entire H.H. Taylor & Son True Value Family, it is with a heavy heart that we announce our decision to close our hardware store. It has been an honor for our family to have served you for over 122 years."

The store, located at 85 Railroad St., announced it would be closing May 26 and had a large closing sale.

"Please know our decision to retire was not made quickly or easily," the owners wrote, "but the time has come for us to embark on a new chapter in our lives. We would like to thank all our incredible employees and wonderful customers, both past and present, who have made Taylor & Son’s storied history possible."

The post garnered 80 reactions and 30 comments.

One commenter said: "The last family (owned) business in town is closing. You have spoiled us for many years and lots of the houses in the area got (their) hardware from you."

Another wrote: "How I hate (to) see Taylor's go out of business they usually had what you wanted and the people working there knew their products. They were not just cashiers but service people."

Anita Regan, secretary of the New Milford Historical Society’s Board of Trustees, called the business "iconic" in the News-Times. She said the store has "great historic value and treasured memories."

The store was founded in 1901 by Harry Henry Taylor, Sr.
