New Milford Man Sentenced in Extortion, Bloody Beating Case

Police say members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club beat the victim with a hammer and stabbed him eight times.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A New Milford man was sentenced to 30 months of prison for his role in an extortion scheme that led to a bloody beating in early 2016. According to U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly, Howard Hammer, 45, of New Milford faces three years of supervised release.

Court documents and statements indicate James Broderick, also of New Milford, lent a person $1,500 for the money to be paid back in four days plus an additional $500 interest. When the person didn't pay him back, Broderick asked Hammer to help him collect. Hammer sent threatening texts to the victim, and discussed taking the man's car as payment for the debt.

On Jan. 25, police responded to a local hotel where they found the victim bloodied and beaten in a hotel room, stabbed eight times in the back. Police later found that members of the Hells Angles biker gang had stabbed him and beat him with a hammer.
