Luis' daughter Kristina followed closely in her father's footsteps and called her dad her hero.

"He was the kindest, most generous man I have ever met. I lost my best friend, my mentor, and my daddy yesterday. I have always grown up hoping to be half the person he was," she wrote on Facebook.

"Almost a year ago, I followed his footsteps into the fire department that has now made me a better and stronger person. I will miss his jokes, and his hugs, I'll miss his laughter and his passion for life. Heaven gained the most incredible man yesterday."
