NEWTOWN, CT — A man who has continually pushed the idea that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax is just a "performance artist," his lawyer told a Texas courtroom, according to multiple reports, including NBC News. Randall Wilhite, the attorney for right-wing radio host Alex Jones, said that Jones is "playing a character" and is nothing like his online persona, during a pre-trial hearing of Jones' custody battle with his ex-wife Kelly Jones.
Wilhite told the court that using Jones' on-air persona to evaluate him as a father would be similar to judging Jack Nicholson's ability to be a father based on his performance as the Joker in "Batman," according to the Austin American-Statesman. However, Kelly Jones told the court that Jones is "not a stable person" and wants to "break Alec Baldwin's neck."

Jones' website Infowars has run stories on the idea that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax. Jones himself issued a "Final Statement on Sandy Hook" in which he said the official story of the events of 12/14 has "more holes than Swiss cheese."
The Texas native gained widespread attention for his purported relationship with President Donald Trump. During the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, Trump appeared on Jones' show and told Jones at the time, "Your reputation's amazing," according to MSNBC.
Jones' comments and his relationship to Trump have angered many in the community, including Mark Barden, who's 7-year-old son Daniel was killed on 12/14. Barden spoke out about the relationship between Trump and Jones, telling The Daily Mail's Marlow Stern during the election that the Republican presidential nominee of the United States is being advised by "a delusional sociopath. It's disgusting."
In February, Newtown officials drafted a letter to the newly elected administration asking Trump to denounce all conspiracy theorists, not just Jones. However, Jones was singled out in the letter due to his reported relationship with the new president.
School Board Chairman Keith Alexander told the Hartford Courant that the board has yet to receive a response to the letter that was sent on Feb. 20.
Those who believe the events of 12/14 did not happen have continued to make the news in recent weeks. Lucy Richards, a woman accused of sending death threats to the father of a victim who was killed in the tragedy, refused to attend a change-of-plea hearing and was arrested on a warrant Tuesday.
A New York man was arrested in November 2015 after he allegedly harassed the sister of slain teacher Vicki Soto at a benefit race held in her honor. The man, Matthew Mills, was accused of shoving a picture of Soto in her sister’s face and claiming she never existed.
Richards' arrest came just days after a Florida Atlantic University professor was terminated by the school because of his alleged conspiracy theories about the events of 12/14.
