How Does Newtown Compare with Area Schools in Math and English?

NEWTOWN, CT — Seventy-two percent of Newtown School District students met or exceeded ELA standards in 2014-2015 for Connecticut's new Smarter Balance exams while 75 percent met or exceeded standards in 2015-2016. Sixty-two percent of Newtown School District students met or exceeded math standards in 2014-2015 while 71 percent met or exceeded standards in 2015-2016.

The Smarter Balance exams replace the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT). The percentage of students statewide meeting or exceeding English standards rose by 3.3 points to 55.7 percent and 3.9 points to 44 percent in math.

The 2014-2015 test administration was a baseline year for Smarter Balanced exams, which have new and higher standards for students that assess critical thinking skills.
