Marilyn Monroe’s Secret Newtown Hideaway Hits The Market For $1.16M
Explore Marilyn Monroe's former weekend retreat in Newtown — a historic estate with a Prohibition-era bar, now listed for $1.16M.

NEWTOWN, CT — She was Hollywood's most iconic blonde bombshell, personified sexuality for a generation, had a famously peculiar taste in husbands, and, according to a recent real estate listing, enjoyed hanging out in a Newtown basement.
Marilyn Monroe was a frequent guest of 20th Century Fox studio executive Walter Hutchinson III while she lived in Roxbury from 1956 to 1961. The 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom farmhouse at 60 Taunton Hill Road, which went on the market just last month for $1.16 million, was the exec's weekend retreat.

The big draw for Monroe, according to the listing from Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices, was the home's Prohibition-era tap room with its "striking" copper ceiling, wrought-iron custom lights and bar hewn from solid maple. It was there the starlet tippled alongside her third husband, playwright Arthur Miller.

Known locally as Boxwood Farm, the residence was built circa 1765, according to Realtor.com, and is sited on 2.51 acres of "spectacular" stonewalled grounds. Visitors will be "enthralled" by the "gleaming" wide plank chestnut floors, "stunning" original beams, and the vintage fixtures that have been "masterfully" refurbished, with an "unmatched" attention to detail.
The estate has all the requisite amenities you would expect in the country getaway of 1950s Tinseltown royalty and "one of Newtown's most cherished properties," including a herringbone marble bath, multiple fireplaces, and handmade cabinetry. Modern sensibilities will be stoked by a "gorgeous" eat-in kitchen with Copenhagen countertops, Gaggenau appliances, and a La Cornue range.
