Newtown Asks Monroe to Allow Sandy Hook School to Stay 'Till 2016
As Newtown decides the future of Sandy Hook School its students are using the former Chalk Hill School building in Monroe.

When the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School displaced students and staff five months ago, the town of Monroe offered use of the Chalk Hill building on Fan Hill Road. Now as Newtown plans for Sandy Hook School's future, its asking for an extended stay in Monroe.
Monroe Town Attorney Jack Fracassini told the Town Council Monday night that Newtown Town Attorney David Grogins approached him about negotiating to extend the lease to 2016.
First Selectman Steve Vavrek said to the council, "I hope you'll agree to it keep it going rent free for our neighbors in need."

While talking to Grogins and Newtown First Selectwoman Pat Llodra about the lease, Fracassini said Llodra insisted that Newtown pay for all of the operating costs, as well as for the security Monroe provides for Sandy Hook School at its current home on Fan Hill Road.
Vavrek said Monroe residents currently cannot use the gym in the former Chalk Hill building, but can use the playing fields after school hours. Police Chief John Salvatore said the public has always been allowed to use the walking trail along the property, though they must access it from Lanes Mine Park or Garder Road and not from the school property due to security there.

Sandy Hook families, children and staff are still shaken from the tragic shooting in their town, so security at the school as been a top priority.
Fracassini wanted the Town Council to approve the lease agreement Monday night, but council members decided to hold off until May 21, so the agreement can be reviewed and Fracassini can answer any questions they may have before a vote is taken.
