Newtown BOE Reviews Financials, Policies At April Meeting
Newtown's Board of Education discussed budget adjustments, staffing plans, and policy updates during its April 22 meeting.
NEWTOWN, CT — The Newtown Board of Education met April 22 to review financial reports, policy updates, and staff matters as the district prepares for upcoming budget decisions.
Board Chair Alyson Plante opened the meeting, where members unanimously approved the consent agenda and financial report for the month ending March 31. Plante and Superintendent Chris Uberti both highlighted the importance of the Apr. 22 referendum results to the district's financial planning.
During the superintendent’s report, Uberti acknowledged bus drivers on their appreciation day with gifts from PTAs and previewed administrative assistants' day celebrations. Reports from subcommittees included updates on financial transfers, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and curriculum development for Asian Studies and Poetry programs.

Student representative Connor Jerfy reported that spring sports are underway, decision day for seniors is approaching on May 1, and recent trips abroad to Spain and Europe were successfully completed.
In new business, the board voted 5-1 to approve the 2024-25 non-renewal list for staff, a standard precaution in case budget adjustments require staffing changes. The board also approved a new propane supply contract with Mitchell, selected through a competitive bidding process.

Several policies were presented for a first reading, including a student dress code update. Discussion included clarifications on how dress expectations apply during off-site field trips.
The board also discussed rescinding certain policies deemed redundant, with clarification that existing bylaws still affirm the board's role in setting budget priorities.
The meeting adjourned at 7:44 p.m.
