Newtown Passes Municipal & BOE Budgets: What Will The Tax Increase Be?

The overall $141.6 million spending plan​ includes $49.9 million for the town and $91.7 million for the schools.

NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown voters passed both the 2025-26 municipal and education budgets on Tuesday, as well as five proposed capital projects, according to unofficial results.

The overall $141.6 million spending plan includes $49.9 million for the town and $91.7 million for the schools. The town budget represents a 2 percent increase over the current spending plan; the schools budget, a 5 percent hike. The numbers will translate into a 28.78 mill rate, or a 6.72 percent tax increase.

According to the Newtown Town Clerk's Office, 4,287 votes were cast, out of 18,310 voters registered, yielding a 23.4 percent voter turnout.

Voters also approved all five capital projects on the ballot. These included:

  • $4.6 million for the planning, design, acquisition and construction of HVAC upgrades, replacements, and improvements at the Cyrenius H Booth Library
  • $4.3 million for the planning, design, construction, reconstruction, remediation and replacement to the A, B, and C wings of the Newtown High School roof
  • $1.5 million for the planning, design, acquisition and installation of the Community Center Pool HVAC unit
  • $1 million for the Bridge Replacement Program be approved?
  • $855,000 for the planning, design, renovation and upgrades to Edmond Town Hall
