NEWTOWN, CT — A former school bus monitor faces charges in connection with an incident that occurred in March involving a special education student, according to Newtown police.

On April 11, 2025, George Saydah, 79, of Bridgeport, turned himself in at Newtown Police Headquarters after being notified of an active warrant. The investigation stems from a report that Saydah struck a special education student while serving as a bus monitor, police said.

Authorities said the incident occurred on Cold Spring Road in Newtown on March 26. Police worked with the Board of Education and the bus company to investigate and determined there was probable cause to file charges, police said.

Saydah is facing one count of assault of an elderly, disabled, or blind person and one count of risk of injury to a child. He is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on April 25. No injuries requiring hospitalization were reported.

Police credited both the Board of Education and the bus company for responding quickly once the incident was reported.
