Newtown Residents Sound Off on Safety Issues

We asked Patch Readers to share their biggest safety concerns in Newtown. Here's what they'd change.

Summer’s nearly here and with each walk in the park, day at the pool and backyard BBQ comes the risk of snakebites, drowning and fires, but don’t worry! There’s no reason to stay cooped up inside all season.

Patch put together a list of summer safety tips to keep you safe and having fun while the weather’s warm. Make sure to give snakes their distance and always swim with a buddy to stay carefree during the dog days.

Keeping these tips in mind, there are other possible dangers that affect Newtown residents year round.

We asked Patch Readers what they thought the biggest safety issues were in their town. Here’s a list of the most pressing problems, from break-ins to traffic jams:

  • "Flagpole intersection...yikes"
  • "No sidewalk on road to Treadwell"
  • "Lack of sidewalks on heavily traveled streets"
  • "Intersection of Route 34 and Toddy Hill."
  • "No sidewalks on all roads in the Borough"
  • "All Rte 34 intersections between Lone Oak Meadow and Rte 111. So many wrecks along that way, especially at Bennet's Bridge."
  • "Chestnut Hill Road in the morning and the afternoon during rush hour times. People use it to bypass trucks going up 34. It's way too dangerous people drive like maniacs. I have called the police department about this issue and one of the Sgt. said he would send someone out to do radar. That was like a year ago no cops. Leave it to them not to do anything."
  • "The traffic agent at the high school"
  • "Side walks. Castle Hill is not the best road to walk on and there are no side walks. Not sure of other roads."
  • "Inattentive and aggressive (read: entitled) drivers."

Is there a problem that wasn’t mentioned? Share it with us in the comments below or on our Newtown Patch Facebook page.
