Police Investigate Disturbance, Identity Theft, And Crashes In Series Of Newtown Incidents

Newtown police responded to incidents involving disorderly conduct, identity theft, motor vehicle charges, and collisions.

NEWTOWN, CT — Police activity in Newtown over the past week included charges related to a disturbance at a Canterbury Lane home, an identity theft case at a local bank, multiple motor vehicle violations, and two traffic collisions, including one caused by a mechanical failure.

Newtown Man Charged With Disorderly Conduct Following Disturbance on Canterbury Lane

A Newtown man is facing a charge of disorderly conduct following a reported disturbance at a Canterbury Lane residence, according to local police.

Officers responded to 21 Canterbury Lane around 6:12 p.m. on July 31 after receiving a report of a disturbance. Following an on-scene investigation, police transported Anthony F. Ruggiero, 57, to headquarters, where he was charged with one count of disorderly conduct.

Ruggiero was released on a written promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at Danbury Superior Court on Aug. 1.

Woman Charged in Identity Theft and Forgery Case at Newtown Bank

A New York woman is facing multiple charges after police said she attempted to use a false identity to withdraw money from a bank in Newtown.

Karen Ann Koomson, 46, of Spring Water, NY, was taken into custody on Aug. 1 at the Union Savings Bank on Commerce Road after employees contacted the Newtown Police Department while she was still at the location, according to a police report.

Koomson is charged with two counts of second-degree forgery, one count of second-degree identity theft, one count of criminal impersonation, and one count of attempted second-degree larceny.

She was released after posting a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Danbury Superior Court on Aug. 14.

Southbury Man Faces Multiple Motor Vehicle Charges Following Traffic Stop in Newtown

A Southbury man is facing several charges following a traffic stop conducted by Newtown police on Aug. 1.

According to a summary from the Newtown Police Department, officers stopped a vehicle on South Main Street around 5:02 p.m. and identified the driver as 36-year-old Jason R. Gagner of Berkshire Road.

Police charged Gagner with second-degree failure to appear in court, operating with a suspended license, misuse of marker plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and failure to maintain minimum insurance coverage.

Gagner was released after posting 7 percent of a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Danbury Superior Court on Aug. 19.

Newtown Man Accused of Damaging Property, Skipping Out on Court Appearance

Alexandro Enrique Moore, 20, of Newtown, faces two charges stemming from separate incidents reported at 191 South Main St. around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 3. He was charged with evading responsibility involving property damage or injury and second-degree failure to appear. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 19.

Driver Cited After Vehicle Strikes Guardrail on Berkshire Road in Newtown

A Shelton woman was cited for a lane violation following a crash that damaged a guardrail on Berkshire Road early Friday morning.

Newtown police said a 2008 Kia Rio driven by 20-year-old Christina Alexandrea Auguste was headed north on Berkshire Road near Sherman Street around 6:44 a.m. on Aug. 1 when it veered across the centerline, left the roadway and hit a guardrail near 92 Berkshire Road.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed from the scene due to damage. Police issued an infraction for failure to maintain lane under Connecticut General Statute 14-236.

Rear-End Collision on South Main Street Leads to Citation for Following Too Closely

A two-car crash on South Main Street resulted in a traffic citation Thursday morning when one vehicle struck another stopped in traffic.

According to Newtown police, the incident occurred around 8:14 a.m. on July 31 near the intersection of South Main Street and Greenbriar Lane. A Honda driven by Sophie Mitchell was traveling southbound behind another vehicle and a 2008 Pontiac G6 operated by Phoebe Jagello, who had stopped in traffic to turn left into a commercial parking lot at 99 South Main Street.

Police said a third, non-contact vehicle passed Jagello on the right and continued south. Mitchell’s vehicle was unable to stop in time and struck the rear passenger side of Jagello’s car.

No injuries were reported. Mitchell was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Mechanical Failure Causes Collision on Mount Pleasant Road; Driver Issued Warning for Unsafe Backing

A mechanical issue led to a two-vehicle crash on Mount Pleasant Road near Johnnie Cake Lane on the night of Aug. 4, according to police.

The incident occurred around 10:22 p.m. when a 2016 Kia Sorento, driven by Tallulah Vivian Daly, 17, of Newtown, lost power while traveling northbound. Daly told police the vehicle displayed several warning lights before it began to roll backward down a hill, unable to accelerate or brake.

As the vehicle rolled, it struck a northbound 2013 Ford Escape operated by Ilir Mamudi of Danbury. The Kia hit the Ford’s right rear quarter panel, causing significant damage and rendering both vehicles inoperable. Each was towed from the scene.

No injuries were reported among the drivers or the two passengers in the Kia. Police issued Daly a written warning for unsafe backing.

New York Man Faces Protective Order Violation Charge in Newtown

A 48-year-old New York man is facing a charge of violating a protective order in connection with an incident that occurred in February on Settlers Lane in Sandy Hook.

Police said Gregory Vedovato, of Eastchester, turned himself in at the Newtown Police Department on Aug. 6 in response to an active warrant.

Following processing, Vedovato was charged with one count of violating a protective order. He is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Aug. 7.
