Restaurant In Newtown To Close Permanently After Car Crash And Staff Health Concerns
After nearly 30 years, a Newtown institution is shuttering.
NEWTOWN, CT — A longtime local institution, Mexicali Rose restaurant in Newtown, announced it will close permanently on Sunday, Sept. 21, nearly three decades since it first opened.
The decision follows two recent events. On Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, firefighters responded around 9:30 a.m. to the Ricky’s Plaza shopping center after a car crashed through the front window of the restaurant. Crews extricated one occupant from the vehicle and transported them to a hospital; the driver—a 76-year-old resident of nearby Southbury—suffered only minor injuries.
Initially, the restaurant announced it would remain closed “until further notice.” Social media updates and Facebook posts indicate it reopened on Saturday, Aug. 30.

The restaurant said the closure stems also from team circumstances: “after nearly 30 years of serving Newtown, it is with heavy hearts that we share that Mexicali Rose will be closing its doors.” The statement added that a member of their team faces health challenges, and the business wants to focus on caring for and supporting her.
