School Activities Cancelled Tonight, Jan. 6

With the ground soaked by a combination of rain and melting snow and temperatures falling below freezing fast, Newtown Public Schools has announced that all student activities starting at 6 p.m. tonight, Jan. 6, have been cancelled.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory that goes into effect at midnight and lasts until 6 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 7. Wind chill temps could get as low as 17 below zero tonight.

There is also a small chance of snow showers tonight, 20%. Tomorrow, the high temperature is forecast to be 8 degrees; Wednesday the high will be 20.

With the extreme cold settling in for the next few days, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has reactivated the state’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol. That means he has directed the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS), the Department of Social Services (DSS), the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), and the Department of Housing (DOH) to coordinate with 2-1-1 and Connecticut’s network of shelters to ensure that the state’s most vulnerable people are protected from the severe cold weather.
