How Much Does North Branford Spend to Educate One Child?

At most recent Town Council meeting, town officials quizzed school officials on the cost of educating children in North Branford. See below.

NORTH BRANFORD, CT - North Branford spends less to educate its students then almost every other school district in the state, according to Superintendent of Schools Scott Schoonmaker.

Schoonmaker, at the most recent Town Council meeting, said that North Branford's cost of educating a child ranks 120th in the state of Connecticut. He said as of last year, the cost of each child was $15,620.

He said among area towns, only East Haven and West Haven pay less per student.

He said, for example, the town of Westbrook pays more than $22,000 per student; Deep River and Guilford over $18,000; Clinton, $17,500.

The discussion was part of school officials talking to the council about next year's school budget.

The school board has submitted two requests: a "status quo" request which would be a 3.85 percent hike over this year's expenditures; and, a 4.48 percent hike, which would fund some additional programs and activities.
