In Memoriam: Eileen R. Hickey Etzel

The former long-time North Branford resident passed away Feb. 28 at the age of 94.

Eileen R. Hickey Etzel of Guilford, passed away on February 28, 2016. She was 94.

Eileen was born in 1921 to Bessie and Patrick Reynolds in New Haven.

She was the fourth of six children and graduated from Albertus Magnus College in 1942 with a degree in Economics and Sociology. She held several jobs, including, as a grader for the Harvard Business School, an admissions officer at Yale New Haven Hospital, a substitute teacher and librarian in North Branford and later as an employment counselor in the Connecticut State Department of Labor.

She married Raymond P. Hickey in 1949 with whom she raised three daughters while living in North Branford. Raymond predeceased her in 2003.

In 2008 she married Simon F. Etzel Sr. with whom she lived at the Gables of Guilford until his death in 2014.

She is survived by three daughters, Elaine and her husband Kasey Cibart of Colorado Springs, CO, Karen and her husband Robert DeBonis, of Waltham, MA, and Ann and her husband Noel Roberts of Durham, and two grandchildren, Zachary Roberts of Needham, MA, and Tresa Roberts of Ormand Beach, FL; sisters-in-law, Carol Reynolds and Ann Reynolds; several nieces and nephews, and her cousin Mariel Reynolds of Guilford. Eileen also leaves four stepchildren Judy Cordes (Richard) of Guilford, Katherine Lipman of Southampton, MA, Mary Fleisher of East Greenwich, RI, and Simon Etzel Jr. (Jennifer Farmer-Etzel) of Madison; several step-grandchildren and several step great grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit the Keenan Funeral Home, 330 Notch Hill Rd. North Branford, Wednesday, March 2, from 4 to7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 3, at St. George Church in Guilford at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Branford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of Branford.
