The Norwalk Fire Department has contained a fire that occurred Tuesday afternoon at 48 East Avenue that started in the basement and killed a pet bird, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ed Prescott.
The department received the call at around noon when a worker hired to build an outdoor staircase for the home heard the fire detector go off in the home, Prescott said. When officials arrived, they observed flames coming from the basement, as well as from the front and side of the home, he said.
"It's an 80 year-old home with a lot of old and new compartments, so we were worried about the electrical system. And even after we put out the fire in the basement, our guys kept finding fire trapped in multiple areas of the home," Prescott told Patch.
While there was concern about a dog being trapped in the home, Presott said that the department discovered that the pet was on vacation with its owners in Florida. No other injuries were reported.
Prescott said that the fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire. As of 1:45 p.m., East Ave. beginning at the intersection of Westport Ave. is closed to traffic.
