With the heavy winds and rain moving through our area over the next few days, the Norwalk Fire Dept. Office of Emergency Management (like them on Facebook) warns there is an increased chance of power outages due to downed trees/ limbs on power lines and issues the following tips:
As families prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Norwalk Fire Department also encourages residents to also take time to prepare for severe weather. While the low-pressure system will move quickly, several rounds of strong winds and heavy rains are expected beginning today and ending Thursday morning which may result in power outages. Temperatures are expected to drop in our area as this storm moves through.
By taking a few simple steps, residents can be prepared for any emergency that may occur, including power outage, severe weather or home fires. While the City continues to monitor the storm and make preparations, residents are encouraged to do the same and adjust plans as needed.

Create a disaster supplies kit of basic items that your family may need in an emergency, such as flashlights, first aid supplies and a battery operated radio. Have supplies in both your home and your cars.
Create a disaster plan for all hazards that will help your family stay connected during emergencies. If you have guests coming for the holiday, take some time to review your plan with them. This includes showing them your meeting place outside the home, two ways out of their rooms and where disaster supplies are stored.

Be careful with candles — Do not use candles for lighting if the power goes out. Use flashlights or glow sticks only.
Use generators correctly — If you have a portable generator and the power goes out, always plan to keep the generator outdoors-never operate it inside, including the basement or garage. Do not hook up a generator directly to your home's wiring. The safest thing to do is to connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator.
Check smoke alarms — Make sure alarms are working properly and replace batteries as necessary. This is especially important when cooking for the holidays.
