NORWALK, CT — The Maritime Aquarium has announced "with a heavy heart" the death of Leila, a beloved 37-year-old harbor seal who resided at the facility in Norwalk.

In a news release, aquarium officials said Leila died Thursday following "a recent age-related decline in health."

The aquarium also noted Leila had surpassed the average life expectancy of 25 years for harbor seals in human care.

Her long life is a testament to the excellent care she received from the facility's animal husbandry team, according to the aquarium.

"I've been lucky to work with our older seals for many years, and although we know it's their time to go, it's still heartbreaking to say goodbye," Animal Husbandry Director Rachel Stein said in a statement. "Our staff build special connections with the animals that we work with over the course of their lives, and that is especially true for our harbor seals. I am extremely proud of the care the team provided to Leila to keep her comfortable as she aged."

Leila was rescued off the coast of Maine as a pup in 1988.

She arrived at the Maritime Aquarium in 1989, where she served as an ambassador and inspired generations of children to care for the creatures of Long Island Sound, according to the aquarium.

"Leila was the perfect blend of sugar and spice," Trainer Alexis Brauner said in a statement. "If she wasn't interested in participating in a training session, she would offer a kiss to distract you. She taught me patience and grace among numerous other lessons. I'll forever carry her in my heart."
