Norwalk Librarian Receives State Honor

The award recognizes her "extensive contributions to children's library services."

NORWALK, CT — Evelyn Cunningham, a longtime children’s librarian at the Norwalk Public Library, has been awarded the 2025 Faith Hektoen Award for Career Achievement in Children’s Library Services by the Connecticut Library Association.

The award recognizes Cunningham’s extensive contributions to children's library services over a 15-year career with the Norwalk Public Library, where she began as a substitute librarian before becoming a full-time staff member. The association cited her dedication to young readers and consistent support for families in the community.

Cunningham has become known for her energetic storytimes, educational programming, and thoughtful book curation, as well as her ability to form strong connections with children, caregivers, and colleagues.

"Evelyn makes each child feel seen, heard, and valued," said Vicki Oatis, head of youth library services at the Norwalk Public Library, in a nomination letter. "She’s more than a librarian—she’s a friend, a mentor, and a source of joy to so many."

Library Director Sherelle Harris also praised Cunningham’s service, recalling their early work together and calling her "just the type of person we want at our service desks and serving children."

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling also commended Cunningham’s work.

"For 15 years, Evelyn has been a beloved part of our library community and is well-deserving of this recognition," Rilling said. "Her love for children and passion for library services has helped so many young readers in our community thrive and Norwalk is so fortunate to benefit from all her contributions."

As Cunningham prepares for retirement, the award marks a culmination of her career and highlights her lasting impact on the Norwalk community and the broader Connecticut library system.
