Heavy Fire Breaks Out At Norwalk Home, Parts Dismantled For Safety: UPDATE

Fire officials said portions of the home's roof, walls and chimneys needed to be dismantled "due to the likelihood of collapse."

NORWALK, CT — Portions of a Norwalk home had to be dismantled due to safety concerns after a heavy fire broke out Monday morning, according to fire officials.

In a news release, Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Maggio said the fire was reported just before 11 a.m. at a single-family home on Morton Street.

One adult exited the home safely before firefighters arrived, Maggio said.

According to Maggio, smoke could be seen coming from the 2.5-story home when crews arrived, with heavy fire on the second floor showing from two sides of the building.

Firefighters battled "an unusually heavy fire load" due to items stacks to the ceiling on each floor of the home, which elevated the blaze to a third alarm fire prior to being controlled, Maggio said.

An excavator was required to dismantle portions of the home's upper roof, walls and chimneys for safety "due to the likelihood of collapse," according to Maggio.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing for one displaced resident, Maggio said.

The Norwalk Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Maggio.
