Snow Emergency Declared For Norwalk: Mayor

NORWALK, CT — Mayor Harry Rilling has declared a snow emergency for Norwalk beginning Saturday, Feb. 8, at noon.

In a news release Friday evening, Rilling encouraged Norwalk residents to be safe and, if possible, stay home during the forecasted snowstorm to allow time for Department of Public Works crews to clear and treat the roads.

Anyone who needs to go out is urged to allow extra travel time and give snowplows plenty of room to work.

Residents are reminded to clear their vehicles' roofs and windows of snow and ice before driving.

The city also asks all vehicles be removed from any snow emergency route. The Yankee Doodle and Maritime Aquarium garages will temporarily be available for residents to park in free of charge starting Saturday at noon, according to Rilling.

For a snow emergency, in accordance with city code:

  • No vehicle shall park or otherwise remain standing upon any snow emergency route when there is present an accumulation of two or more inches of snow or ice for a period of one hour or more between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
  • A declared snow emergency shall remain in effect until terminated through an announcement by the mayor.
  • No person shall park a vehicle or otherwise allow a vehicle to stand upon any portion of a snow emergency route. No person shall park a vehicle or otherwise allow a vehicle to stand upon any street in such a manner as to constitute a hazard or obstruction to vehicular or pedestrian traffic or to hamper and interfere with the work of removing or plowing snow or removal of ice.
  • Vehicles in violation of these restrictions may be ticketed or towed.

"Be a good neighbor by clearing your sidewalks and checking on any family, friends or neighbors who may need assistance," Rilling said in a news release.
