Want to Improve Your Bowling Score? Don't Muscle the Ball

With a rainy weekend ahead of us, it may just be the perfect time to perfect your bowling swing. Patch headed to AMF Rip Van Winkle Lanes on Connecticut Avenue on Thursday to get some tips.

"It's all about a nice, straight swing," Stamford resident Ed Smith told Patch. "But you can't muscle the ball. Don't throw it or it won't go where you want it to go. It's about swinging and releasing the ball at the right time—have to find your own rhythm."

Smith, 74, was enjoying a game with a few of his friends, who get togetherat AMF once a week. Smith said that while he started bowling as a child, he didn't really start perfecting his game until the past few years.

He said that a bowling camp that he attended two years ago in Fishkill, NY helped him improve his score, although there isn't one way to approach the game.

"Everyone has a slight different way of doing it," he said. "There really isn't one perfect swing. I saw a guy older than me walk up [to the lane] holding onto a cane and he scored well. You have to work with what you got."

If you love the game and are serious about improving, though, Smith suggests attending a camp.

"They teach you things like how your game might be affected by how the lane is oiled," he said. "I learned a lot."

Smith also plays with a senior league once a week, but insists he's not the most knowledgeable player. He pointed to a group of men playing in a nearby lane and suggested that I interview them.

"We are seniors here, but they are the super seniors," he said while laughing.
