Benchmark To Open Assisted Living Facility in Shelton
It's the 17th Benchmark facility in the state and the 47th in New England.
Lottie Palmer, 92, picked up a shovel and helped start the construction of Benchmark at Shelton Ridge Tuesday.
Palmer lives in Middlebrook Farms in Trumbull, an assisted-living facility which Benchmark also built.
Tom Grape, chief executive officer and founder of Benchmark, called Shelton "a wonderful community that has embraced us." It will allow seniors who want to stay in the city but cannot take care of their homes to remain in Shelton.
The building will be environmentally friendly, he added.
John Anglace, president of Shelton's Board of Alderman, thanked the company for choosing Shelton.
"I want to be one of the first to put my name in," he said. "Shelton is a very desirable community. We haven't increased taxes in seven years. This affords people an excellent opportunity to stay here."
"You picked a great location. This is right in the middle of everything," Anglace added.
Palmer said the Trumbull facility is "like coming home. I'm happy to have a place to call second home."
According to Benchmark spokeswoman Laurie Rodman, "This $25 million construction project will bring 250 jobs to the area and when completed will employee 85 people. Benchmark at Shelton Ridge will have 92 apartments – 72 traditional assisted living and 20 for those needing memory care in a secured neighborhood."
The site is near the Split Rock shopping center on Bridgeport Avenue.
