Joe Laucella: The Path of an EMT

At 16, Shelton resident Joe Laucella was hanging out with a questionable crowd when he decided to try becoming an EMT.

But soon Laucella fell for the EMS path. After 20 years as an EMT in Shelton, the St. Joseph High School alumnus became the executive director of Trumbull EMS.

"When I was 16 I didn't know what I wanted to do," he said. Afterward, he realized "I love helping people and giving back to the community."

So Laucella is now urging high school and college students this summer to become EMTs.

"It is an excellent class for any college and high school student, a great opportunity to find direction," Laucella said.

Volunteering as an EMT will help students who want to have a career in medicine and  those who need to perform volunteer hours. It also provides training that can lead to a career and that costs less than other schools' tuition, Laucella said.
