Residents Come out to Support Simsbury's Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge

Second Burgers on the Bridge proves popular.

Numerous residents came out to the Old Drake Hill Bridge Wednesday afternoon to support the non-profit that works to upkeep the historic landmark.

The second "Burgers on the Bridge" featured burgers, hot dogs, drinks and other treats as well as live music. During the festivities, with temperatures in the mid 70s, couples sat by the river, children danced and many stood in line to get their burgers.

All proceeds benefit The Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge, a non-profit that works to maintain the flowers on the bridge.

Much of the effort recently has gone into the flower irrigation system, said Jan Lintner. That system is approximately 15 years old, causing some necessary repairs.

"It all goes to the bridge," she said.

The organization keeps up with the work through flower box and basket subscriptions and donations. This is the second year of the event. The circa 1892 bridge was replaced in 1992 with a newer structure nearby.

The historic structure was restored three years later.
