State Representative to Convene Water Summit

State Rep. John K. Hampton is hosting the Connecticut State Water Planning Summit onThursday, October 24 at the State Capitol, inviting stakeholders to meet under the gold dome to begin crafting a statewide water plan.

Hampton, a freshman legislator, was a key leader in opposition to a plan from the Metropolitan District Commission to supply the water to the University of Connecticut by diverting millions of gallons out of the Farmington River watershed.

In January, Rep. Hampton introduced legislation placing a moratorium on water diversions until a water plan for Connecticut was created.

Ultimately, the Connecticut Water Company was selected by the UConn’s Connecticut’s Board of Trustees to provide water to the Storrs campus and neighboring Mansfield.

While satisfied by that decision, Hampton remains alarmed that the state does not have a water plan and is issuing a clarion call to action.

“The time is now to bring together state and local officials, legislators, state agencies, environmental groups, and the general public to start the dialogue, share information, exchange ideas and come up with a meaningful action plan moving forward. I believe that Connecticut has the brainpower and resources to produce a strategic road map for the state’s water supply. Everyone is welcome to the table to add their voice to this important dialogue,” said Rep. Hampton.

The event begins at 10 a.m. in Room 2B of the Legislative Office Building and will include expert panelists and opportunities for public input and Q&A.

“Water quality and availability is one of the most fundamental and critical issues that affects all of our lives. We must plan accordingly for this most precious of our natural assets. This remains a top legislative priority for me as we prepare for the 2014 session,” added Hampton.
