Starting today, the Simsbury Free Library is hosting an exhibit of the work of Catherine M. Elliott. The Simsbury Public Library is hosting a special program about Civil War Railroads tonight at 7 p.m. Speaker Dave Smith, of Old Saybrook, will tell the fascinating story of how the North mastered the wartime use of the technology to attack deep into the South and why the war ended in a skirmish at a railroad siding in central Virginia.

Is your high school student getting ready to take the SAT? Local tutor, Martha Gilbert will offer four hands-on essay workshops for students who will be taking the SAT this fall. Students will learn strategies to write an effective essay, from the zinger of an introductory sentence, the art of brainstorming, mechanics to writing a powerful and impressive conclusion. There are 15 spots in each session. Students only need to attend once as each session will be identical.

The Ethel Walker School is hosting a panel discussion about Women's Athletics and the 40th Anniversary of Title IX October 23 at 7:30 p.m. ESPN's Tom Farrey will moderate the panel. Panelists include Alexander Wolff of Sports Illustrated, Donna Lopiano of Sports Management Resources (named one of the top ten most powerful women in sports by FoxSports) and Julie Chu of the U.S. Women's Ice Hockey National Team and the Montreal Stars (3-time olympic medalist).
