[Video] Thousands Without Power in Simsbury After Sandy Grazes Region

Updated Oct. 31 at 8:00 p.m.: There are now only 722 homes left without power as CL&P crews continue work to repair outages that affected over 4,000 Simsbury residents. Six of Simsbury's seven schools will reopen on Thursday.

Thousands of Simsbury residents were without power this morning after strong winds from Hurricane Sandy grazed the region.

Connecticut Light and Power crews and Simsbury Public Works crews have been working through the night to clear fallen trees and restore power to 4,202 residents. Update: Power has been restored to 2,939 of the affected homes as of 10:40 a.m. on Oct. 31.

Town officials have declared a local emergency following the massive power outages.

Hopmeadow Street is currently closed to traffic between Massaco Street and Drake Hill Bridge Road in downtown Simsbury.

Update: Firetown Road is open according to a reader on the Simsbury Patch Facebook page. Hopmeadow Street remains closed as of 2:55 p.m.
