Gainfield Students "Can" Principal for a Good Cause

Southbury students collect cans to aid the Southbury Food Bank.

Gainfield Elementary School students tried their best to "can" their principal, Mr. Matt Salvestrini--but it was all for a good cause.

The GES students and staff motivated the school community to do a good deed for the local community. The fifth-grade Gainfield Guides, school counselor Laura Phelan, and Principal Matt Salvestrini developed the idea to "Can" The Principal.

GES collected an office-full of food and household items, ultimately filling 28 cardboard boxes for the Southbury Food Bank.

The students and staff brought in so many canned and boxed goods for the Southbury Food Bank that Salvestrini was forced out of his office space and into the hallway to do his day-to-day work.  The students were immediately enthusiastic about this new initiative and Salvestrini was verry happy to be "canned".

"The Gainfield Guides, the school's fifth grade leaders and I am hopeful that we collected enough food to feed a plethora of families as we approach the holiday season," said Phelan. "It is one way that we like to give back to the Southbury community during our ten months of service especially while some of our own GES families use the Food Bank as a resource. I am proud of our fifth grade leaders for their enthusiasm and assistance in organizing this event."
