Meeting Set to Determine Fate of Southbury Dog Pound

Boards of selectmen and finance have agreed to meet and discuss the future of the Southbury dog pound.

Members of the boards of selectmen and finance of Southbury will meet on June 15 to discuss a $20,000 to $25,000 request by the Animal Shelter Task Force to design and assess where to put a new dog pound, according to the Republican-American.

The project’s total is approximately over $1 million, and both boards are determining whether that large expense is worth it, the Rep-Am reported. Numbers show the percentage of occupancy has dropped from 25 percent of nights in 2012 to 19 percent in 2014.

Town officials said the real question being investigated is whether taxpayers should be spending money on a new shelter, according to the Rep-Am. It is agreed by many that the 50-year-old shelter needs improvements, but no ideas for resolution of been announced as favored, as of now.
