Subject: Avian Influenza Awareness and Prevention

Animal Control Officer Kristin Cedor urges Southbury residents to remain vigilant regarding their backyard flocks. While Southbury has not reported any cases of avian influenza (bird flu) at this time, a confirmed case was identified in New London on January 15, 2025.

Given the number of small flocks and large farms in Southbury, we encourage all residents to follow these biosecurity measures to protect their animals.

Biosecurity Tips

Signs of Avian Influenza

  • Sudden death without prior symptoms
  • Lack of energy or appetite
  • Drop in egg production or soft-shelled/misshapen eggs
  • Swelling of eyelids, comb, wattles, or shanks
  • Purple discoloration of wattles, comb, or legs
  • Difficulty breathing (gasping)
  • Nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing
  • Twisting of the head or neck
  • Stumbling or falling
  • Diarrhea
