Southbury Officials Encourage Residents to Recycle More

Recycling has declined among Southbury residents, and town officials want this to change immediately.

Post cards will be sent to all Southbury residents with information regarding recycling, including reminders of what recyclable materials are accepted at the transfer station, according to the Republican-American.

First Selectman Ed Edelson told the Rep-Am that he feels residents don’t want to take the time to separate their garbage anymore, and is trying to push recycling as a way for the town to save money.

If residents can recycle 5 percent more, it’s estimated the town could reduce the garbage disposal budget by $20,000, the Rep-Am reported. The town pays $58 a ton to have the trash incinerated, but is paid for every ton of recyclables sent out.
