Southbury Postpones Hiring New Officer to Pay for Trooper

Southbury will put off hiring it's 23rd police officer in order to pay for the increased cost of having a resident state police trooper.

Towns across the state that participate in the resident trooper program will now have to pay 85 percent of the cost of the trooper’s salary, police cruiser, uniform allowance and other benefits, as compared to the previous 70 percent, according to the Republican-American.

The increased expense is expected to cost Southbury about $30,000 beginning July 1, when the new state budget goes into effect. The position supervise the town’s police force, the Rep-Am reported.

In order to save the town money, a 23rd police officer will be hired in September instead of July, which will save the town an estimated $15,000, the Rep-Am reported.
